Summary of Otero Humanist Community (OHC) meeting 17 January 2026- Alamogordo
Library
- We discussed organizing more officially in terms of electing leadership as well as
committee facilitators at our next meeting. With the solidification of group leaders,
those individuals will be in communication with Humanist Association of New
Mexico regarding becoming a chapter under their 501(c) (3). We discussed
ensuring that the OHC would act in accordance with the larger organization’s
non-profit status, noting non-partisan activities in the setting of humanist ideals
and shared values.
- Elected positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer
- Committees: Education, Public Information/Media, Civic Engagement/Outreach
- We discussed the framework of activities including Community Building and
Fellowship, Ethical Dialogue and Learning, Education and Public Engagement,
as well as Service and Civic Action
- We discussed and critiqued the Mission Framework, the updated version which is
included with this summary
- We discussed and provided a list of upcoming community events where we could
potentially do outreach. Currently, there are discussions with HAFB regarding the
process of becoming a “recognized private organization” as well as
communication with the City of Alamogordo to engage with the many sponsored
events that happen throughout the year. Potentially, our first event would be at
the Base Otero for their car show on 11 April 2026
- We discussed and agreed upon having a social event weekly: Coffee at the Drip
or Catalinas, Gathering at 575 Brewery, Game Night Gathering at the mall and
finally a monthly Potluck.
- On 18 January 2026, those available will attend the Unitarian Universalists
service and coffee/conversation starting at 10am. We are looking at forming a
relationship with the potential of holding meetings there as well as our monthly
potlucks.
- We discussed the upcoming MLK activities and meeting up to participate
- Our next gathering will be at The Drip at 10am on 24 January 2026
- Our next meeting will be 31 st January at 3pm Alamogordo Public Library with a
potluck gathering to follow, venue TBD.
